Hi, everybody!
Do you know what monsters people from Hong Kong are scared of? In this lesson, you'll learn about three scary monsters in Hong Kong.
Let’s start with the most popular monster.
goeng1 si1
[slowly] goeng1 si1
It's known as the Chinese zombie.
Chinese zombies are stiff corpses dressed in Qing Dynasty official uniforms. They move around by hopping with both arms stretched out. Chinese zombies kill people by absorbing their life force, Qi. One can become undetectable to the zombies by holding their breath.
That sounds pretty scary, right?
You might have heard about the next monster. The next one is...
neoi5 gwai2
[slowly] neoi5 gwai2
It's known as the female ghost dressed in white or red.
The female ghosts are restless females who got killed or committed suicide because of injustice against them. They return as horrible ghosts to seek revenge.
Okay. Here's the last monster.
妖怪
[slowly] 妖怪
Have you heard of this next one? This is simply known as the demon.
The demons are malevolent animal spirits or fallen celestial beings.
Having acquired magical powers, a demon's aim is to gain immortality and become a god. They are capable of unspeakable cruelty and have remarkable power.
Let's wrap up this lesson by recapping what we've learned. Listen to the names of each monster and repeat after me.
