Lesson focus

Oscar: It’s grammar time.
Echo: In this lesson, we heard
Oscar: 瞌返陣. (hap6 faan1 zan6.)
Echo: To take a nap.
Oscar: 瞌返陣. (hap6 faan1 zan6.)
Echo: If we put
Oscar: 返 (faan1)
Echo: After a verb, it means we haven’t done something in a while and need to do it now.
Oscar: 冇錯喇! (mou5 co3 laa3!)
Echo: For instance
Oscar: 我已經做咗好多日, 而家想放返幾日假. (ngo5 ji5 ging1 zou6 zo2 hou2 do1 jat6, ji4 gaa1 soeng2 fong3 faan1 gei2 jat6 gaa3.)
Echo: I have been working for days and now I want to go for holiday.
Oscar: 我已經做咗好多日, 而家想放返幾日假. (ngo5 ji5 ging1 zou6 zo2 hou2 do1 jat6, ji4 gaa1 soeng2 fong3 faan1 gei2 jat6 gaa3.)
Echo: Right and look at the second half of the sentence.
Oscar: 想放返幾日假. (soeng2 fong3 faan1 gei2 jat6 gaa3.)
Echo: Want to go for a holiday.
Oscar: 想放返幾日假. (soeng2 fong3 faan1 gei2 jat6 gaa3.)

Echo: To say that we haven’t done this in a while.
Oscar: 我已經做咗好多日, 而家想放返幾日假. (ngo5 ji5 ging1 zou6 zo2 hou2 do1 jat6, ji4 gaa1 soeng2 fong3 faan1 gei2 jat6 gaa3.)

Oscar: 上個星期佢請病假, 今日佢上返班. (soeng6 go3 sing1 kei4 keoi5 cing2 beng6 gaa3, gam1 jat6 keoi5 soeng5 faan1 baan1.)
Echo: Last week, he called in sick and
Oscar: 今日佢上返班 (gam1 jat6 keoi5 soeng5 faan1 baan1)
Echo: Today he
Oscar: 上返班 (soeng5 faan1 baan1)
Echo: Is back to work.
Oscar: 上返班. (soeng5 faan1 baan1)
Echo: Right. So he hasn’t worked for a while and needs to get back to work.
Oscar: 上個星期佢請病假, 今日上返班. (soeng6 go3 sing1 kei4 keoi5 ceng2 beng6 gaa3, gam1 jat6 soeng5 faan1 baan1.)

Oscar: 返 (faan1)
Echo: After a verb
Oscar: 休息, 休息返 (jau1 sik1, jau1 sik1 faan1)
Echo: We are saying that someone hasn’t done this in a while. So they should.
Oscar: 你做咗幾個鐘頭啦! 休息返陣啦! (nei5 zou6 zo2 gei2 go3 zung1 tau4 laa3! jau1 sik1 faan1 zan6 laa1!)
