Nei5 ho2, ngo5 hai6 Olivia. Hi everybody! I’m Olivia.
Welcome to CantoneseClass101.com’s “saam1 fan1 zung1 gwong2 dung1 waa2”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Cantonese.
In the last lesson, we learned the numbers from one to ten. Have you forgotten? Here I'll tell you again:
jat1, ji2, saam1, sei3, ng5, luk6, cat1, baat3, gau2, sap6!!
And now let’s continue from eleven.
sap6 jat1.
[slowly] Sap6 jat1.
sap6 ji6.
[slowly] Sap6 ji6.
sap6 saam1.
[slowly] Sap6 saam1.
sap6 sei3.
[slowly] Sap6 sei3.
sap6 ng5.
[slowly] Sap6 ng5.
sap6 luk6.
[slowly] Sap6 luk6.
sap6 cat1.
[slowly] Sap6 cat1.
sap6 baat3.
[slowly] Sap6 baat3.
sap6 gau2.
[slowly] Sap6 gau2.
And finally we have:
ji6 sap6.
[slowly] Ji6 sap6.
Okay, now repeat after me. I'll say the numbers and give you time to repeat each one.
11. sap6 jat1.
12. sap6 ji6.
13. sap6 saam1.
14. sap6 sei3.
15. sap6 ng5.
16. sap6 luk6.
17. sap6 cat1.
18. sap6 baat3.
19. sap6 gau2.
20. ji6 sap6.
These numbers are easy to remember, they always start with sap6, or "ten", then just say the extra number after it. Simple math!
Let’s not stop at 20! Counting from thirty to one hundred is super easy! Now I'll give you the tens:
saam1 sap6
sei3 sap6
ng5 sap6
luk6 sap6
cat1 sap6
baat3 sap6
gau2 sap6
jat1 baak3
These numbers are incredibly easy to remember! Don’t you think so?
The last thing to learn today is how to form compound numbers above twenty. This is also super easy!
Take the tens and simply add the numbers you learned in the previous lesson.
Let’s try it out.
How would you say “fifty-six” in Cantonese? Let’s take it step-by-step. "Fifty" is ng5 sap6, and then add "six", luk6.
ng5 sap6 luk6! It’s done! Isn’t that easy?
Let’s make another number, for instance, "ninety-eight."
Take "ninety", gau2 sap6, and add "eight", baat3:
gau2 sap6 baat3 !
Now it’s time for Olivia’s Insights.
For numbers between 21 and 29, you might hear people using jaa6 as 20-, instead of ji6 sap6. Both can be used in spoken Cantonese.
For example:
jaa6 jat1 / ji6 sap6 jat1 “21”
jaa6 cat1 / ji6 sap6 cat1 “27”
After only two lessons, you are now able to count to one hundred in Cantonese!
In the next lesson we are going to put your number knowledge to use! Do you have all the skills you need to go shopping in Hong Kong? If not, I'll be waiting for you in our next “saam1 fan1 zung1 gwong2 dung1 waa2” lesson.
haa6 ci3 gin3!
