Hi everyone! I’m Alisha. |
Welcome to Conversational Phrases! |
We’ve found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you’ll use in real conversations. |
In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask the question, "When is your birthday?" After watching this video, you’ll be able to ask and answer about the date of an event. |
Now, let’s take a look at some conversational phrases! |
Listen to the dialogue. |
你幾時生日? (nei5 gei2 si4 saang1 jat6?) |
三月四號。 (saam1 jyut6 sei3 hou6.) |
Once more with the English translation. |
你幾時生日? (nei5 gei2 si4 saang1 jat6?) |
“When is your birthday?” |
三月四號。 (saam1 jyut6 sei3 hou6.) |
“It's on March 4th.” |
First of all you'll need to learn how to say "When is [event]?" |
The pattern is: |
你幾時 [event]? (nei5 gei2 si4 [event]?) |
This Cantonese sentence translates as "You when [event]?" But it means “When is [event]?”. |
For example: |
你幾時生日?, 你幾時生日? (nei5 gei2 si4 saang1 jat6?, nei5 gei2 si4 saang1 jat6?) |
Now, how do you answer this question? |
三月四號。 (saam1 jyut6 sei3 hou6.) |
Listen to it again: |
三月四號。, 三月四號。 (saam1 jyut6 sei3 hou6., saam1 jyut6 sei3 hou6.) |
This Cantonese sentence literally translates as "March 4th." But it means "It's on March 4th.". |
