Siuling: 去麥當勞食早餐(heoi3 mak6 dong1 lou4 sik6 zou2 caan1) |
John: meaning "Go to McDonald's for breakfast." |
John: Let’s break down this phrase. |
Siuling: First is 去(heoi3), which means "go." Next is 麥當勞(mak6 dong1 lou4). |
John: That is "McDonald’s." Next is "eat." |
Siuling: That is 食(sik6). It’s followed by 早餐(zou2 caan1). |
John: "breakfast." You can use the verb "to go" when you want to move to a destination. |

Siuling: Sure. For example, you can say... 我想去麥當勞食早餐。(ngo5 soeng2 heoi3 mak6 dong1 lou4 sik6 zou2 caan1.) |
John: ...which means "I want to go to McDonald's for breakfast." |
John: Okay, what's the next word? |
Siuling: 身份證(san1 fan2 zing3) |
John: meaning "ID card." |
John: This is a pretty important noun phrase. |
Siuling: First is 身份(san1 fan2) which means "identity." Then is 證(zing3). |
John: That means "certificate, proof." |
Siuling: 身份證(san1 fan2 zing3) is a card that has lots of personal information. |
John: This information proves who you are. |
Siuling: There is also a 駕駛執照(gaa3 sai2 zap1 ziu3), "driving licence." |
John: Can you give us an example using this word? |
Siuling: Sure. For example, you can say... 香港身份證(hoeng1 gong2 san1 fan2 zing3) |

John: Okay, what's the next word? |

Lesson focus
|
John: In this lesson, you'll learn about checking in to a hotel. |
John: Let’s start with some vocabulary and sentences that will help when you’re reserving your hotel or checking in. |
Siuling: 單人房 (daan1 jan4 fong2) |
John: "single room" |
Siuling: 雙人房 (soeng1 jan4 fong2) |
John: "double room" |
Siuling: 三人房 (saam1 jan4 fong2) |
John: "room for three people." For rooms for more people, just swap out "three" for other numbers. |
Siuling: 上網 (soeng5 mong5) is "internet." 有冇得上網?(jau5 mou5 dak1 soeng5 mong5?) |
John: "Is there an internet connection?" |
Siuling: 毛巾 (mou4 gan1) is "towels." 房入面有冇毛巾? (fong2 jap6 min6 jau5 mou5 mou4 gan1?) |
John: "Are there towels in the room?" |
Siuling: 洗衫 (sai2 saam1) is "laundry." 你哋有冇洗衫服務? (nei5 dei6 jau5 mou5 sai2 saam1 fuk6 mou6?) |
John: "Do you have a laundry service?" Some English words are used in Hong Kong. For example... |
Siuling: 我想聽朝五點Morning call。(ngo5 soeng2 ting1 ziu1 ng5 dim2 morning call.) |
John: "I’d like a morning call tomorrow at 5 AM." Or... |
Siuling: 房入面有冇WIFI? (fong2 jap6 min6 jau5 mou5 WIFI?) |
John: "Is there Wi-Fi in the room?" There are more helpful words and phrases in the lesson notes. For now though, let’s leave this and move on to the past tense. |
Siuling: It might be that our listeners have already studied the past tense, but if not, we have some good news for you! |
John: Yes, there is only one past tense in Cantonese, so you can use the same verbs to cover both finished and unfinished actions. There are a few rules, however. |
Siuling: For verbs with one Chinese character, add 咗 (zo2) behind the verb. For example, 食咗 (sik6 zo2). |
John: That is the past tense "ate." What do we do with verbs that have two Chinese characters? |
Siuling: We add 咗 (zo2) after either the first or second character. For example, 返咗工 (faan1 zo2 gung1). |
John: "went to work." In this case, it’s after the first character. |
Siuling: Another example is 了解咗 (liu5 gaai2 zo2). |
John: "understood." This time, it’s after the second character. |
Outro
|
John: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye! |
Siuling: 拜拜!(baai1 baai3!) |
