John: Hi everyone, and welcome back to CantoneseClass101.com. This is Business Cantonese for Beginners Season 1 Lesson 16 - Passing on a Cantonese Phone Message. John here.
Siuling: 大家好!(daai6 gaa1 hou2!) I'm Siuling.
John: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to pass on a phone message. The conversation takes place at an office.
Siuling: It's between Linda and a secretary.
John: The speakers are co-workers, therefore, they will speak both formal and informal Cantonese. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
秘書: 張小姐,李生打電話嚟話想知個計劃幾時準備好,佢語氣聽起嚟都幾嬲。

Linda: Did he say anything else?

Secretary: No, he just asked that you call him back as soon as possible.

Linda: Okay, were there any other calls to me?

Secretary: Yes, Ms. Wong called and said that she will be a little bit late. Something is holding her up. She sounded a little bit worried.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
John: Delays are sometimes unavoidable, but they’re never good in business.
Siuling: No, nobody wants to hear that their product or service has been delayed.
John: Or that someone will be late for an appointment.
Siuling: Definitely not that! If it happens, call and explain why you’re late.
John: What is traffic like in Hong Kong?
Siuling: Hong Kong is always heavily congested.
John: So make sure you give yourself enough time to get where you need to go.
Siuling: Even if you’re not driving, foot traffic can make you late.
John: Yeah, sidewalks are really busy in Hong Kong too, so you may not be able to walk as quickly as you want to.
Siuling: If you’re late, you should apologize. For example, 唔好意思, 因為塞車, 我遲到。(m4 hou2 ji3 si1, jan1 wai6 sak1 ce1, ngo5 ci4 dou3.)
John: "Sorry, I am late because of the traffic jam."
Siuling: 好對唔住, 因為塞車, 我遲到。(hou2 deoi3 m4 zyu6, jan1 wai6 sak1 ce1, ngo5 ci4 dou3.) means the same.

Siuling: 盡快處理(zeon6 faai3 cyu2 lei5)
John: meaning "to handle it as soon as possible."
Siuling: First is 盡快(zeon6 faai3), which means "as soon as possible." This is followed by 處理(cyu3 lei5).
John: This means "to deal with, to handle."
Siuling: You can use this phrase to say you will deal with something as soon as possible.
John: There is a more colloquial version of this phrase.
Siuling: This is 盡快搞掂(zeon6 faai3 gaau2 dim6).
John: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Siuling: Sure. For example, you can say... 我哋會盡快處理投訴個案。(ngo5 dei6 wui5 zeon6 faai3 cyu2 lei5 tau4 sou3 go3 on3.)
John: ...which means "We will handle the complaint as soon as possible."
John: Okay, what's the next word?
Siuling: 唔使擔心。(m4 sai2 daam1 sam1.)
John: meaning "Don't worry."
Siuling: First is 唔使(m4 sai2), meaning "do not need." Next is 擔心(daam1 sam1)
John: This means "worry."
Siuling: You can also say 唔使驚(m4 sai2 geng1).
John: This will assure people to not be frightened or afraid.
Siuling: That’s right.
John: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Siuling: Sure. For example, you can say... 唔使擔心,佢會冇事嘅。(m4 sai2 daam1 sam1, keoi5 wui2 mou5 si6 ge3.)
John: ... which means "Don't worry, she'll be all right."
John: Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

John: In this lesson, you'll learn about passing on a phone message.
John: We’ve already looked at phrases about leaving a message, this time we will begin by looking at how to pass on a message.
Siuling: This is reported speech.
John: There is one important verb that you need to remember in this situation.
Siuling: 打電話嚟 (daa2 din6 waa2 lei4) or 打嚟 (daa2 lei4).
John: It means "to call here." Let’s look at some examples.
Siuling: 王小姐打嚟叫你打返畀佢。(wong4 siu2 ze2 daa2 lei4 giu3 nei5 daa2 faan1 bei2 keoi5.)
John: "Ms. Wong called and asked you to call her back."
Siuling: ABC公司有人打電話嚟,但係冇留名。(ABC gung1 si1 jau5 jan4 daa2 din6 waa2 lei4, daan6 hai6 mou5 lau4 meng2.)
John: "Someone from ABC Company called but didn’t leave a name."
Siuling: It might be helpful to say how someone sounded, too.
John: Yes. Did they sound happy, or frustrated? This is very handy when reporting what someone said to another person.
Siuling: In Cantonese, we use the verb phrase 聽起嚟 (teng1 hei2 lei4).
John: "to sound like"
Siuling: Then add the adjective after.
John: Let’s hear some examples.
Siuling: 佢聽起嚟好唔開心。(keoi5 teng1 hei2 lei4 hou2 m4 hoi1 sam1.)
John: "He sounded really upset."
Siuling: 佢聽起嚟好開心。(keoi5 teng1 hei2 lei4 hou2 hoi1 sam1.)
John: "He sounded happy. You can also use it to describe how situations appear.
Siuling: 聽起嚟好好玩。(teng1 hei2 lei4 hou2 hou2 wan2.)
John: “This sounds really fun.”
Siuling: 聽起嚟有啲複雜。(teng1 hei2 lei4 jau5 di1 fuk1 zaap6.)
John: “This sounds a little complicated.”
Siuling: 聽起嚟幾好。(teng1 hei2 lei4 gei2 hou2.)
John: “This sounds really good.”
