David: The most important ones – do you have a car? Do you have a house? |
Gimmy: Yeah. |

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES |
David: Let’s take a close look at some of these words and phrases. The first word we want to highlight, we translate it as “to have or not to have.” |
Gimmy: 仲有. (zung6 jau5.) |
David: So this is a question – “do you have…” |
Gimmy: 有冇. (jau5 mou5.) |
David: “Do you have a car?” |
Gimmy: 你有冇車? (nei5 jau5 mou5 ce1?) |
David: “Do you have a house?” |
Gimmy: 你有冇樓? (nei5 jau5 mou5 lau2?) |
David: “Do you have a boyfriend?” |
Gimmy:有冇男朋友? (jau5 mou5 naam4 pang4 jau5?) |
David: Or “do you have a girlfriend?” |
Gimmy: 有冇女朋友? (jau5 mou5 neoi5 pang4 jau5?) |
David: The rest of our vocab section consists of names of relations. |
Gimmy: Right. |
David: In the dialogue, we heard the word for “wife”. |
Gimmy: 老婆. (lou5 po4.) |
David: In the sentence “I also have wife.” |
Gimmy: 我仲有一個老婆. (ngo5 zung6 jau5 jat1 go3 lou5 po4.) |
David: If you’re a woman, you might change that and say “ I also have a husband.” |
Gimmy: 我仲有一個老公. (ngo5 zung6 jau5 jat1 go3 lou5 gung1.) |
David: “Husband.” |
Gimmy: 老公. (lou5 gung1.) |
David: So we have “wife”… |
Gimmy: 老婆. (lou5 po4.) |
David: …and “husband”. |
Gimmy: 老公. (lou5 gung1.) |
David: Now if you’re not married, you don’t have a wife or a husband but you can be in a relationship with either a boyfriend… |
Gimmy: 男朋友. (naam4 pang4 jau5.) |
David: Or a girlfriend. |
Gimmy: 女朋友. (neoi5 pang4 jau5.) |
David: So you might say, “I also have a boyfriend.” |
Gimmy: 我仲有一個男朋友. (ngo5 zung6 jau5 jat1 go3 naam4 pang4 jau5.) |
David: “I also have a boyfriend.” |
Gimmy: 我仲有一個男朋友. (ngo5 zung6 jau5 jat1 go3 naam4 pang4 jau5.) |
David: Or “I also have a girlfriend.” |
Gimmy: 我仲有一個女朋友. (ngo5 zung6 jau5 jat1 go3 neoi5 pang4 jau5.) |
David: “I also have a girlfriend.” |
Gimmy: 我仲有一個女朋友. (ngo5 zung6 jau5 jat1 go3 neoi5 pang4 jau5.) |
David: And the measure word we’re using for all of these, Gimmy? |
Gimmy: It’s 個(go3), the most common word. |
David: Right. So to review, to ask a question “do you have”, we use the verb phrase… |
Gimmy: 有冇. (jau5 mou5.) |
David: We also know how to say “wife.” |
Gimmy: 老婆. (lou5 po4.) |
David: “Husband.” |
Gimmy: 老公. (lou5 gung1.) |
David: “Boyfriend.” |
Gimmy: 男朋友. (naam4 pang4 jau5.) |
David: “And girlfriend.” |
Gimmy: 女朋友. (neoi5 pang4 jau5.) |
David: And with that, let’s get to our grammar section. |
Lesson focus
|
David: So Gimmy, what are we focusing on in our grammar section today? |
Gimmy: In our grammar section today, we’re talking about how to say “also have..” |
David: Right. To say you’ve got something, you also have something else. |
Gimmy: Something else. |
David: We heard this in the last line of our dialogue. |
Gimmy: 我仲有一個老婆. (ngo5 zung6 jau5 jat1 go3 lou5 po4.) |
David: “I also have a wife.” |
Gimmy: 我仲有一個老婆. (ngo5 zung6 jau5 jat1 go3 lou5 po4.) |
David: And of course, we can swap out the word “wife” and replace it with anything. |
Gimmy: Right. |
David: For instance, you might say “I have a car, I also have a house.” |
Gimmy: 我有車,我仲有樓. (ngo5 jau5 ce1, ngo5 zung6 jau5 lau2.) |
David: “I have a car. I also have a house.” |
Gimmy: 我有車,我仲有樓。 (ngo5 jau5 ce1, ngo5 zung6 jau5 lau2.) |
David: Nothing that we’re repeating the word… |
Gimmy: 我有車,我仲有樓. (ngo5 jau5 ce1, ngo5 zung6 jau5 lau2.) |
David: …in both sentences. But we don’t need to. Like in English, we could say, “I have a car, also a house.” |
Gimmy: 我有車,仲有樓. (ngo5 jau5 ce1, zung6 jau5 lau2.) |
David: So Gimmy, how are we saying “also to have”? |
Gimmy: 仲有. (zung6 jau5) |
David: “Also to have.” |
Gimmy: 仲有. (zung6 jau5) |
David: This is a very simple but very powerful way to chain together ideas. |
Gimmy: Right. |
David: “He has a problem, I also have a problem.” |
Gimmy: 佢有問題, 我都有問題. (keoi5 jau5 man6 tai4 , ngo5 dou1 jau5 man6 tai4.) |
David: Right, we’ve all got problems. “He has a girlfriend, I also have a girlfriend.” |
Gimmy: 佢有女朋友, 我都有女朋友. (keoi5 jau5 neoi5 pang4 jau5, ngo5 dou1 jau5 neoi5 pang4 jau5.) |
David: Right. Or on our last upbeat note, if you go to the doctor, you might say, “I have a headache and a fever.” |
Gimmy: 我有頭痛, 仲有發燒. (ngo5 jau5 tau4 tung3, zung6 jau5 faat3 siu1.) |
David: So remember this word… |
Gimmy: 仲有. (zung6 jau5.) |
David: “Also to have.” |
Gimmy: Or sometimes just “also.” |
Outro
|
David: That brings us to the end of our lesson for today, though. Thanks for listening and we’ll see you on the site. |
Gimmy: 多謝收聽, 下次見. (do1 ze6 sau1 teng1, haa6 ci3 gin3.) |
